Synopsis |
East
meets West in Sondheim and Weidman's musical,
which chronicles the historic arrival
of American Commodore Matthew Perry in
Japan 150 years ago. Two friends -a fisherman
and a samurai- witness the momentous events
that unfold with Japan's awakening from
isolation.
As
Japan adjusts to the chock of the new,
so the friends must reconcile their increasing
sense of alienation in a quickly changing
modern world as their friendship is ripped
apart.
PACIFIC
OVERTURES is a glorious theatrical fusion
celebrating the tradition of Japanese
Kabuki and Noh theatre, whilst embodying
the musical styles of the West. It features
one of Sondheim's most lyrical scores
including the wellknown songs "Someone
in a tree" and "Pretty lady".
